DIY Decorating Ideas for the Holidays

  1. Use a cluster of empty frames – many sizes and shapes – on a mantel or wall shelf to make a stunning statement. You could add colorful Christmas wrapping paper in the center of each one to add whimsy and color or hang a special Christmas ornament with fishing line or colorful ribbon from the top of each frame to hang in the center.
  2. Hang many colorful ornaments together from your front doorway to welcome your guests, as they arrive to your home.
  3. Instead of traditional garland hanging on your mantle, hang a string of brightly colored vintage or collected Christmas cards.
  4. Bring in outside, natural elements for a bit of a rustic flair. Use greens and branches tied with ribbon in a few vases around your home.
  5. Create clusters of 3-5 tea light votive candles around the home to set a beautiful and elegant mood for any room.
  6. Dress up favorite stuffed animals with Christmas ribbon and place in different areas of the home for a touch of fun and to please the little one(s) in your family.
  7. Make your front door wreath out of found objects from around your yard and in the home and put on a styrofoam wreath form or inexpensive craft store artificial wreath… Some examples of found objects could be: pinecones, fresh greens, bright ribbon, felt, Christmas ribbon, brightly colored buttons, yarn, raffia, old, brightly sweater pieces, fresh or artificial berries, etc. You will have it year after year.
  8. For an amazing centerpiece on your dining room table, you could add fresh cranberries and greens to wine glasses and place taper candles for an elegant, contemporary spin on a regular candle holder. Add fresh greens, cranberries, and glass ball ornaments around the 2 candles on the center of the table to complete the look.
  9. Strings of lights put above kitchen cabinets and on top of bookshelves or armoires add a beautiful and cozy glow.
  10. Using Christmas fabrics – plaids, ginghams, checks, and the like in bright, Christmas colors can always add a splash of fun and magic to any room. Swag some fabric around the bottom of a vase of flowers. Run fabric down the center of any coffee table or dining room table. Use fabric as napkins for that special holiday dinner. Use fabric together with candles for a great addition to a side table in a bedroom.

All in all, decorating magic is truly about setting the mood for the holiday of joy. Getting that warm, cozy, festive room doesn’t have to cost a lot. May your holidays be magical!
